Near - synonyms
I was scrolling through the reels in the evening and somehow I came across these three words - Gorgeous, stunning and adorable. All have the same purpose that is to describe the beauty. But when I started to search for the exact meaning of each of these words, it had separate definitions. They can be categorised to be as near - synonyms. Near-synonyms are words that have similar root meanings but differ according to usage and context. Chat gpt gave me this word and it's definition.
I know that these words have similar meaning but I wanted to know in what context they are used and can they be used interchangeably. Actually they cannot be used, was the answer for the question. Though they describe beauty and are used in the context of positivity, still their intensity differs a lot. Stunning is a word used to describe an awestruck moment and something more extraordinary. Gorgeous is a term used to describe a strong attraction and a kind of pleasing sense involved. The term adorable is used to describe the very small , innocent and cuteness of the thing. Mostly adorable are used in context to enhance the beauty of a baby or animals like puppies etc.
I knew these words existed in the dictionary and I have invariably used them in many places without even realising they have their own intensity. Now I think I have understood a little about this. When I asked the chatgpt , it too said they were different and gave me a term called near - synonyms and words like these can be tagged under this category. And I tried playing a quiz game with gpt asking it to send me questions for which I have to use any of these three words according to the context. I did it to have a clear picture of the concept. It gave me 8 questions, I got 4 right and one it told me partially right because it had two answers and the other 3 to be corrected. Nice effort right!!
Initially I used them randomly. Mostly when we react to a text or an image using emojis. 😲,😍,😊 these three emojis, we use them often right! But each has an intensity. There are many other emojis too to describe these three words and these three emojis mentioned above could also be interpreted in other ways but I took it for a basic understanding, that's it.
Good initiative
ReplyDeleteLoved how you connected language to reactions and emojis. A beautiful read
