Debate

An opinion or thoughts that are conveyed as an argument. I am not very sure about this definition but in my understanding, debate is a medium of communication where we prove our stand in argumentative style. This word, we would have heard commonly in both schools and colleges, where they will be debate competitions conducted and that who speaks up boldly, with valid points and substantive evidence for the point is awarded. It is of  the speaker's opinion but to prove our ideas we utilize data. It's actually an interesting activity and a learning methodology. 

Plato argues debate as a foolish art form where arguing for victory will not reveal a truth. He wanted a dialectical option where you arrange a debate into structure like how mentioned earlier. Mere debate for victory is something dangerous and considered to be stupid according to him. 

In one sense it's actually a valid point. We should argue for truth and with proper evidence like how advocates in the court session proceed or follow. Advocates are meant to struggle for justice and truth and so in that way a debate should be a meaningful. 

But that doesn't mean people will have the same thought and idea every time. So if we debate today, we will try to defend our points, but at a point we try to understand the concept even more deeper which may change perspectives. So it's a fun-filled activity through which we can learn. "Dulce et utilite" as sidney mentions that is, it delights as well as teaches us. 

Today in class we had a debate session and the topic is a simple, general one in which , especially the present generation, will have a neutral idea. In this situation one has to take a side in order to know the another side of the topic too. This is kind of a friendly match. 

Debate always engages people into thinking, articulating, structuring and to volunteer in participation. A kind of calmness, patience, listening skills should also be enhanced in debate. It helps us to follow order as it will be needed. These are the main focus for a healthy debate session.
