Learning a new language
Today I got to read the poem "An Introduction" by Kamala das. A very autobiographical and a nice poem to read. I have never been fond of poetry but there are few poems that I like. This poem was very simple which gave me a clear idea in the first go which is also one of the reasons for me to like those few poems.
And there is one line where she tells us that 'in whatever language I write that becomes mine, and a question to the poet asking why do you write in this particular language cannot be taken'. That's the way I initially understood and I posted my doubt to my friend asking what's wrong in asking a poet why they chose this language to write? And she replied that it's not in the general way meaning asking them as a question out of curiosity is different from using stereotypical, judgemental and dominative tone. And yes, to the core I agree with this tone point.
My writing today is about this concept called language. Knowing a language is actually a very beautiful art form right. I always liked to learn languages and wanted to be multilingual. Have you seen this movie 'English Vinglish ' by the late actress Sridevi , a renowned star in Indian cinema for her remarkable performances. This movie was her comeback to the cinema field after a long gap. The movie entirely deals with how an Indian household woman, being continuously humiliated by her family to whom she shows her love for her lack of knowledge in English, decides to learn the language and shows that it's a language which could be learned by everyone despite their identity and position. She shows how nice it will be to take efforts to learn a language despite all hindrances and humiliations. This movie also shows that one shouldn't be let down because of their lack of knowledge instead see how they take effort to acquire and learn. It also motivates that our weakness could be changed into our strengths if we think we can. Her own daughter and her husband are the first people who constantly highlight her weaknesses.
One interesting scene is there in the movie where for the first time she goes all alone to New york, and on the flight she meets a person. This role is played by Ajith Kumar, a well known Tamil actor for the movie in Tamil and in Hindi it was played by Amitabh Bachchan. A very small but effective role. At the end of their meeting, this character says that speaking a 'language is beautiful but trying to speak a language is much more beautiful than anything'. And to experience that beauty we would face difficulties.
She faces difficulties in multiple ways but at the end of the movie when she speaks in English in front of all the people, nowhere she expresses her struggle instead only says how she learned through her tough times.
Language is a language and anyone can learn it. Learning a new language is actually a good art form and at last they are going to help us in communication which is the major purpose. Learning languages and speaking in it will anyway make us confident.
